Healthy Practices To Maintain Your Oral Health

Good oral health is important for a number of reasons. First, it can help prevent a number of serious oral health concerns, like cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. Additionally, good oral health can improve your quality of life. For example, it can improve your self-esteem and enable you to smile with confidence. If you are looking for ways to improve your oral health, here are a few:

  • Brushing your teeth

You should brush your teeth at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes each time you brush. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush that will help you reach all surfaces of your teeth, including your back teeth. Use gentle, short strokes when brushing. Brush the outside surfaces of your teeth, including your front teeth, outside surfaces, and biting surfaces. Then brush the inside surfaces of your teeth, including your front teeth, inside surfaces, and biting surfaces. Finally, brush the chewing surfaces of your teeth.

  • Flossing your teeth

Flossing is equally important to maintaining oral health because it removes plaque and food buildup from between the teeth.

  • Rinsing your teeth

Make sure you thoroughly rinse your mouth after brushing. Residual bacteria in the mouth can lead to bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. The rinse can be water, mouthwash, or salt water, depending on your preference.

  • Regular dental checkups

The ADA recommends that you visit your dentist every six months for a checkup. These appointments are for more than just checking for cavities. Your dentist can give you a thorough cleaning, check for signs of oral cancer, and even provide education on things like proper brushing and flossing techniques. Some patients may benefit from more frequent visits if they are at high risk for dental problems.

    • Avoiding sugary foods

The bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar, so sugary foods will contribute to the buildup of plaque. Brushing your teeth after every meal and drinking water instead of sugary drinks will help keep your mouth healthy.

    • Avoiding Tobacco Products

Tobacco products negatively affect your oral health in a number of different ways. From staining your teeth to increasing your risk of oral cancer, tobacco in any form should be avoided.

Cigarettes, pipe tobacco, and smokeless tobacco products can all cause severe dental problems. They irritate the tissues of the mouth, causing gums to recede and teeth to become loose. The stains left behind by tobacco products don’t just stain your teeth; they stain the soft tissues of your mouth, as well. These stains can be very difficult to remove. The best thing you can do for your oral health is to quit using tobacco products altogether.
