Wisdom Teeth Extraction - Does Age Matter?

Wisdom teeth removal is never too late. It can be done at any age. To avoid complications and damage to other teeth, they should be removed immediately. Red Rock Dental can help you and assist you throughout any procedure.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Have To Be Extracted?

It is a common misconception that if your wisdom teeth are not bothering you, there is no reason to remove them. While some people never need to have their wisdom teeth extracted, the majority of patients will require wisdom tooth extraction at some point in their lives. Here is a list of some of the issues that wisdom teeth can cause:

  • Gums that are swollen or bleeding
  • Constantly having bad breath
  • Opening the mouth is difficult
  • Wisdom teeth can push against your second molars, causing damage to other teeth

Is It Too Late if I’m Past My Twenties?

As previously stated, you are never too old to have your wisdom teeth extracted. If you did not have your wisdom teeth removed as a young adult, you will most likely have to have them removed later in life.

It is important to remember that everyone's teeth are unique, so you will not be getting them out at the same time as a friend or relative. However, as you get older, the roots in your mouth start to take full form, making the extraction process unnecessarily painful.

Are There Any Complications If I Wait Too Long?

There are risks, just as with any other surgery. The risk of complications may increase with age. Complications may include:

  • Increased recovery time – If any of your wisdom teeth are impacted, the surgery will become much more difficult
  • Nerve damage – As a person ages, the roots begin to grow downward towards the nerve. The nerve is in charge of the sensation in the lower lip. If the roots are close to the nerve, the extraction may cause damage to it.
