Tips To Manage Dental Anxiety

Dental phobia or dental anxiety is the fear of going to the dentist. Dental phobia can prevent you from going to the dentist for regular care and seeking treatment when you need it. Here are a few tips to ease dental fear.

Speak up about your dental fears

Of course, avoiding the dentist out of fear isn’t a good idea. You need to address your fear with your dentist. Being afraid of the dentist is nothing to be ashamed of – it’s just one of the many things people struggle with in life. Your dentist is trained to handle patients with dental phobias, so don’t be afraid to share your concerns with them. Dentists are kind and understanding professionals who want to help patients overcome their worries. They are not going to judge you, and they won’t make you feel ashamed. Instead, they will work with you to help you feel more comfortable so that you can get the dental treatment you need and deserve.

Many patients worry about what the dentist will think of them if they admit they are afraid. However, dentists understand that many people are afraid to go to the dentist, and they know how to work with patients who feel anxious or fearful. In fact, some dentists specialize in treating patients with dental anxiety or even dental phobia. If you are afraid, don’t be embarrassed to speak up and let your dentist know. They will do their best to make sure that you receive treatment in a way that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. So be sure to share your feelings with your dentist. They may be able to offer options for treatments that will reduce your fear and will help you to remain calm and comfortable during your procedure.

Agree on a signal for your dentist

It’s very helpful if you and your dentist can receive signals from one another before a procedure begins. If you have a sensitive gag reflex or tend to become anxious in a dentist’s chair, a signal is a great solution.

For example, you can agree ahead of time that you can raise your hand if you feel uncomfortable and need a break. Whatever kind of signal you establish will be up to the two of you to decide, but agreeing on it beforehand can help ensure that you’re on the same page when the moment comes.

Bring your trusted person with you

When you are heading to the dentist’s office, be sure to bring a friend or loved one that knows your dental fears very well so they can assist you. Having someone you trust in the room can really help ease your fears and anxieties.

Bring distractions

Get your mind off of the procedure by catching up on your favorite shows on your phone or listening to music. You can even bring along a book to read while you are in the chair. Bringing along a distraction can really take the edge off of your fear and anxiety.

Consider sedation dentistry

Sedation dentistry is a great option for those who suffer from dental fear or anxiety. Intravenous sedation can take the “fear” out of visiting the dentist and allow you to receive necessary treatments such as fillings and cleanings without fear. This safe form of medication helps you relax while your dentist works. Patients typically have no recollection of their visit once treatment is completed.

Oral sedatives are another option for patients who have mild to moderately severe dental fears. These medications are prescribed to be taken at home prior to your visit. Your dentist will instruct you on when to take the medication and how much to take. This allows patients to feel relaxed and comfortable during their appointment. Minimize your dental fear and talk with your dentist about how you can feel more comfortable during your next appointment. Contact our office today to schedule your next checkup!
