Supra-Gingival Minimally Invasive Dentistry

Just like in medicine, dentistry continues to learn that less invasive treatment i.e. medications, procedures or surgery, results in less risk of secondary injury to treated and adjacent tissues, less recuperation time, less post-operative pain, and faster and more complete healing. Supra-gingival, minimally invasive dentistry is a modality or style of dentistry which uses the latest materials and innovative techniques to very intentionally keep restorations (fillings, crowns, veneers, onlays, etc.) above the gum line, and which uses the most minimally-invasive techniques available. This also applies to fillings; oftentimes, too much tooth is drilled away and may be placed, unnecessarily, below the gum line.

By minimizing the amount of tooth drilled away and staying away from the gum:
  • The patient maintains as much natural, healthy tooth structure as possible, leading to better durability of the tooth.
  • During the procedure, the dentist minimizes injury to tooth, pulp (nerve), and gums, leading to faster recovery and less pain.
  • The restoration is kept above the gum as much as possible, which decreases chances of gum disease caused by subgingival margins and maintains healthier gums.
  • The nerve of the tooth is much less traumatized, which often prevents the need for unnecessary root canal treatment.

Prevalence of Periodontal Disease
Laser Bacterial Reduction
A 2012 scientific study found that greater than 47% of the American population over the age of 30 suffer from periodontal or gum disease. This is disturbing given the fact that gum disease generally progresses with symptoms that are pain free. These include: bleeding gums, swollen and sometimes pain gums, very red gums, bad breath, loose permanent teeth, gum recession, and a missing tooth. Gum disease is inflammation of the gum tissues caused by the build-up of aggressive bacteria. The bacteria take root in the pockets in between the gum and teeth.

If left undisturbed, the bacteria will progressively destroy the surrounding gum and bone, leading to deepening of the periodontal pocket. This allows more bacteria to build up and becomes a vicious cycle until enough gum and jawbone is lost and the tooth requires extraction. We are strong advocates of early detection and prevention to minimize the time and cost of treatment. We customize the type of cleaning and monthly interval between your cleaning to help you achieve and maintain optimal gum health. We also provide laser therapy to kill the harmful bacteria associated with inflammation and the progression of gum disease. Whatever your needs may be we will strive to provide you with: quality, comfortable, affordable care.
