What Are the Reasons For Onlay Restorations?

An onlay restoration is a customized filling designed from composite resins, ceramics, or gold. They can be used to repair teeth that have been impaired by decay or trauma or fillings which have deteriorated. Onlays are also considered partial crowns, and very minimal enamel structure is required for their placement. They are practically similar to the inlay restorations, except they conceal more chewing cusps of an affected tooth. Onlays restorations are highly durable and can last for many years.

At Red Rock Dental, we strive to preserve as many healthy teeth as possible while giving you the most brilliant smile. We offer various onlay compositions to best suit your needs and preferences.

Common Reasons for Onlay Restorations

  • To address broken or fractured teeth
  • To cosmetically enhance your smile appearance
  • To repair decayed teeth
  • To correct fractured fillings
  • To replace large fillings

What To Expect From the Onlay Procedure?

An onlay procedure usually requires two dental visits. Our dentists will numb the tooth with local anesthesia during your first visit and remove any old filling materials and existing tooth decay. We will carefully prepare and shape the area to make room for the onlay restoration. Then we will take accurate impressions of the prepared tooth and use them to craft your customized onlay restoration at our dental lab. Meanwhile, a temporary acrylic onlay will be fixed over the prepared tooth to protect it until your new restoration.

Once your new onlay restoration is ready, you will have to come in for your placement. The tooth will be meticulously cleaned and polished, and then the onlay restoration is precisely bonded into position. A few adjustments are made to ensure a proper fit and a comfortable bite if necessary.

After Care of Onlays

  • To ensure the longevity of your onlay restoration, you need to follow instructions that will prevent any complications:
  • Do not bite or chew food immediately after the procedure, as you can potentially damage your oral structures.
  •  Avoid sticky, crunchy foods for at least twenty-four hours following the placement of the onlays.
  • Brush and floss your teeth every day as it will help remove any bacteria or food debris from the restored area and stop the development of decay and cavities in the remaining tooth structure.
  • Mild discomfort or soreness can be expected following the onlay treatment. If you do feel any discomfort, pain killers can be used.
